Lake Mead hit a record high elevation of 1,220 feet above sea level in the summer 1941, just five years after completion of the dam, but the level has fluctuated and been in decline ever since. The entire Colorado River Basin has been in a drought for 15 years, causing water levels in the reservoir to plummet.
